Quick description: You have some video data in the form of a Hi8 digital videotape. You want it on your computer, in a file format that you can work with. You don't want this process to take too long. And you don't want to have to pay for, or download, any special software. This is how you do it!
Step 1: Plug the camera into your computer, & rewind the video tape.
I use a cable that is DV on the camera's end, and Firewire800 on the computer's end. There are a few of these cables kicking around the office. I had bought some that I donated to the cause, although I haven't found them in a while. You could just as easily use a USB cord, but it will take longer. Firewire allows for quicker data transfer in general.
Step 2: Open Quicktime player and start a "new movie recording"
Step 3: Make sure Quicktime is getting video & audio from the Hi8 camera
Quicktime may try to take video from the computer's iSight camera...if you see yourself, this is what's happening. So, click on the downwards arrow to get the menu for camera/microphone, and switch it to DV-VCR for both "camera" and "microphone"
Now you are good to go!
Step 4: Hit record in quicktime, and press play on the camera.
Step 5: Save the file and move on with your life.
