Useful links for using Zotero

Hi Everyone. In an effort to get everyone using the same citation software, we are going to encourage everyone to download and start using zotero. It is FREE (Big plus!), works with firefox, and lets you share your citation library with your research group over a network. The only hitch is that you must have firefox open to create bibliographies and make in-text citations. Zotero's website is user-friendly and easy to navigate, but here are some links to get everyone started:

Mainpage:

Downloading the word processor plugin to enable in-text citations:

Downloading references:

Once those two are installed, the website is pretty comprehensive. The zotero toolbar appears unobtrusively at the bottom of you browser and you click on it to visualize your library. To add a reference, simply use Google Scholar, or another search engine to catalog websites, articles, or books. Zotero also works with UMD's library search engines. When the search list appears, you should see an icon (file folder, book, etc.) that says, "save to zotero") to the right of your webpage address browser window. Click it, check the appropriate box, and zotero saves your selection... that is pretty much it.

In-text Citations and Bibliographies:

Once you have properly installed the word processor plugin, open firefox and download a few references.  Now, open word and type in a sentence or two. To add a citation at the end of your sentence, go to the top of your screen and you will notice (on the far right hand side) a black scroll icon. Right click the icon. One of the choices will now be "zotero."  Under zotero, you will now find a drop down menu (add citation, add bibliography, etc.) When initiating a new document, you will have to specify your citation style, but everything else is auto-generated from there. Enjoy!

Joining/creating groups:

if you are on a research project, it may be useful to share references. Once again, the zotero website it very useful to explain how to do this:
