Instructions for Accessing the New Server

You are in the right place if you'd like be able to...

...print to the printer in room 1322

...upload/open/modify/save files or folders in our group's shared network space

...backup/store/upload/download files or folders from your personal network space

...help anyone else do these things by editing these steps as you see fit.

Intro:

We no longer will use Novel workstation.  Now we are on a windows network, which can be accessed via a VPN connection.  This will be the new location of what we used to call the O drive.  If you want to PRINT to the Dell in room 1322, you'll have to follow these steps.

The bottom line is, we still have access to the O drive and our personal drive, but we just have to go through a different process to get to it.  I have already been set up, which for windows users is really pretty easy.  Unfortunately it is a little trickier to set up with macs, but it works just fine.

Instructions for MACINTOSH Users

Step 1: Set up a new password.

1.1: This is done by asking the Phys computer help desk people.

Step 2: Download application "Network Connect"

2.1 Using your macintosh computer, go to https://sslvpn.ece.umd.edu/phys

2.2 Login with the username and password you set in Step 1.

2.3 Next to "Network Connect," click "Start."  If you see it, do it.  If you don't see it or it doesn't work, email phys help desk.

2.4 Downloading may prompt you for your computer's username & password.  Do it.

2.5 Also, your browser may ask you if you trust this website.  Trust it.

2.6 The "Network Connect" app should open automatically and log you in.  You are now connected.

The app is temporarily installed on your computer.  When log off or close the app, it should disappear.

In case the Network Connect doesn't automatically connect, the server name it connects to is "sslvpn.ece.umd.edu".  If you don't automatically connect, just type in the server name into the box and hit enter.

Step 3: Access The Server

3.1 Connect to the network via "Network Connect" (see step 2).

**10/23/2012 NOTE: If you just want to print, skip steps 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5

3.2 Go to the finder and from the menu bar choose "Go" -> "Connect to Server" (shortcut: "command - k")

3.3 The "Connect to Server" window will open and in the "Server Address" box you enter one of the following:

     - If you want the group's network drive (what we used to call the O:// drive) is at smb://physfaculty.ece-isr.umd.edu/perg_group

     - If you are a grad STUDENT, your personal network space is at smb://physstudent.ece-isr.umd.edu/gradstudents/username

     - IF you are a PROFESSOR, your personal network space is at smb://physfaculty.ece-isr.umd.edu/username

     - After you enter it, you can click the "+" button to save that server address to the list of favorites below.

3.4 After you click connect, a window opens up for you to type in your user name and password (from step 1).  You can also choose for this info to be saved so you don't have to enter it every time.

3.5 The folder you accessed will open in a new window.

Anyone can read/write files on the group drive, but only you can see/read/write files on your personal space.

Step 4: Add Printer

4.1 Open the "System Preferences" and click "Print & Fax."  Click the "+" button to add a new printer.

4.2 The "Printer Browser" window will open.  "IP Printer" should be selected.  Under Protocol, choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket"

4.3 In the address box, put "pergprinter.physics.umd.edu".  Under the address box, it should say "Valid and complete address."

4.4 Then the printer location should show up.  (It will incorrectly say room 1301, but that's okay!)

4.5 Click "Add".

4.5 Make sure the "in menu" box for pergprinter is checked. Now when you print, "pergprinter.physics.umd.edu" is one of the options.

Note: you must be connected to the VPN (see step 2) to print since the printer is now behind a firewall.

Instructions for PC Users (this is for Vista...XP should be essentially the same)

Step 1: Set up a new password.

1.1: This must be done on the computer in room 1322 next to the refrigerator (unless you email phys help desk for permission to do it on another computer).

1.2: Make sure nobody is already logged in.

1.3: USERNAME is your typical UMD username (e.g. "jshmoe" if your email is jshmoe@umd.edu).  PASSWORD is asdf&*123

1.4: Choose new password (include at least one number, CAPITAL LETTER, or $ymbol).

1.5: Once the computer logs in, you are instantaneously good to go!

Step 2: Access Server

2.1 Open Control Panel, double click on "Network and Sharing Center"

2.2 You should see the network Physics VPN.  Connect to it.

2.3 Put in the username & password you recently created (see step 1)

2.4 In the address bar of your Windows Explorer browser (not necessarily your web browser) put the path to the group network folder or your personal network folder.  The folder locations are:

     GROUP FOLDER: \\physfaculty.ece-isr.umd.edu\perg_group

     PERSONAL (student): \\physstudent.ece-isr\gradstudents\username

     PERSONAL (professor): \\physfaculty.ece-isr.umd.edu\username

2.5 You may want create a shortcut to the Physics VPN network.  To do this, go back to Network and Sharing Center, right-click on Physics VPN, and create new password.  Drag it to your desktop, your taskbar, or your start menu for easy access in the future.

2.6 If you would fix it so you can print to the Dell Laser in room 1322, go to STEP 3

Step 3: Set Up Printer

3.1 Connect to Physics VPN (step 2)

3.2 In your Windows Explorer address bar, put \\physprint.ece-isr.umd.edu

3.3 Double click on the printer phys1322-perg.  Your computer should download the driver for the Dell Laser MFP 1600n.

3.4 You are now good to print to the printer in room 1322.  When you print from any application, select the printer called "phys-Perg on physprint.ece-isr.umd.edu"
