Online, Out-of-Class Resources

Page history last edited by Brandon James Johnson 4 years, 6 months ago

Currently university students use a large amount of online, out-of-class resources to supplement their in-class and/or offline resources (like textbooks and notes).  The Online, Out-of-Class Resources Project is exploring various aspects of how undergraduate students approach their physics and engineering classes with regard to use of resources available on the internet, especially in the out-of-class spaces.  As the amount and variety of available online resources continues to increase, their use among students continues to evolve as well.  Among a large list of possible online resources, currently some of the most common are Chegg, Yahoo Answers, YouTube, Khan Academy, and GroupMe.  We are interested in how students use these resources, how various uses affect learning, and how students orient themselves to the use of these resources regarding ethical action.

These research curiosities were born out of the some data taken on the Quantum Mechanics Project.  There, we were interested in looking more carefully at student experiences in their quantum mechanics classes.  Through a set of interviews about their experiences, it seemed to use that their use of online, out-of-class resources was relevant to their experience in the class and their learning more generally.

Four researchers are primarily involved in thinking about this project:
