About Me:

I graduated with high honors in 2012 from the University of California, Berkeley (go Bears!) with a degree in Physics.  My undergraduate thesis, Model3: Modeling Students' Models of Physics Models explored student discourse in a discussion in which students were asked to come to consensus on the definition of a physics model.  I have also researched student understanding of heat and temperature with the Physics Education Group at the University of Washington.  While in Berkeley, I was a participant and leader in The Berkeley Compass Project, where I learned the importance of community and student agency in undergraduate physics.   I joined the University of Maryland PERG in Fall 2012. 

I am an elected member of the UMD Physics Graduate Committee and the elected PERLOC Representative of the PER Consortium of Graduate Students. 

Besides physics, I enjoy dancing Lindy Hop, weightlifting, and cooking.

 

Currently Working On:

  • Studying how communities that bridge social and academic life can support students in persisting in the physical sciences.
    • Designing, Teaching and Evaluating UNIV100- The Physics Student in the University and PHYS299B- Developing a Physics Toolbox 
    • Studying community and identity formation across UNIV100 and PHYS299B, and Berkeley's Compass Project
  • Studying how positional dynamics in programming and design affect students' participation in design more broadly.
    • Co-designing and Co-teaching an Arduino module to UMD Physics Summer Girls Summer Camp.
  • Participating in the Access Network, a research-practice community dedicated to fostering community and supporting diversity efforts in undergraduate physical science programs.
